In Europe people got to know about pipes only after the discovery of America. After 1492 smoking was considered to be the activity of devil's companions and was even punished. Smoking in Portugal and Spain could provoke the punishment and putting to jail. And because of such consideration, tobacco pipes were made in the form of devil and conserve such form till nowadays. But at that time there were only a few such pipes.
In general the spread of tobacco gained its extreme points only one hundred years after the discovery of America. The first European country that adapted tobacco was England. In 16th century England colonized the North America and tobacco was one of profitable points of the convent. Holland adapted tobacco soon and spread tobacco to Russia through the Russian king Peter I who use unusual measures in spreading smoking in Russia.
